A vízhiány elleni védekezést a 10/1997. (VII. 17.) KHVM rendelet szabályozza, annak 2021. évi módosítása alapján.
A vízhiány elleni védekezésre felkészülés során az érintett VIZIG gondoskodik a többletvízkészletek betározásáról és a vízelosztó csatornahálózat – maximális – üzemvízszintjének eléréséről, annak tartásáról, a belvízcsatornákban történő vízvisszatartásról. A VIZIG az intézkedésekről és a hidrometeorológiai helyzetről hetente helyzetértékelést, aszályjelentést készít az OVF részére.
A vízhiány elleni védekezést a rendelet 3.sz. mellékletében felsorolt vízhiány kezelő körzetekben kell ellátni.
A DDVIZIG esetében hat ilyen körzet került meghatározásra.

Vízpótló rendszerek fejlesztése
A 2021-ben védekezési feladatok sorába beemelt vízhiány elleni védekezés egyes elemeinek fejlesztése a DDVIZIG-en új feladatként jelentkezik.
A 05.02 sz. Dráva menti körzetben lévő Ős-Dráva rendszer és kapcsolódó elemeinek kiépítése volt az első olyan fejlesztés igazgatóságunkon, mely egy nagyobb terület tartós vízhiányos állapotának felszámolásához szükséges műszaki létesítmények megvalósítását jelentette.
A jelenlegi fejlesztési elképzelések tartalmaznak több olyan elemet is, melynek céljai között szerepel az aszály elleni védekezés lehetőségeinek kiépítése is.

A vízhiány elleni védekezés készültségi fokozatait a 10/1997. (VII. 17.) KHVM rendelet 4. sz. melléklete határozza meg.
