International Danube-Day 29th June, 2017 Barcs

2017. július 05., szerda 07:48

The first International Danube Day was organized in 2004. International Danube Day has been celebrated by countries of the Danube River basin since the 10th anniversary of signing the Danube River Protection Convention. The objective of the International Danube Day is to draw attention to the natural values of this wonderful river, which, as the slogan says, connects and does not separate the countries along the river bank.

This year the main event of International Danube Day in Hungary was organized by the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate and the General Directorate of Water Management in Barcs at River Drava, as River Drava is one of the tributary of River Danube. Due to the effective co-operation between Republic of Croatia and Hungary, the two nations together drew attention to the value of waters, rational use, preserving its values, and common action.

The programme started at 10 o'clock in the morning with ceremonial greetings held on a barge at River Drava, then continued with professional presentations in the exhibition tent. Foremost Balázs Somlyódy, head of the General Directorate of Water Management welcomed the participants, then speeches were made by Neven Marčic, Consul - Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Hungary; József Magyar, Ambassador - Embassy of Hungary to the Republic of Croatia, Zagreb; Silvio Brezak, Deputy Director of HRVATSKE VODE, WATER MANAGEMENT OSIJEK; Ivan Zavadsky, Secretary - International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River; Norbert Bíró, President - Assembly of Somogy County; Csaba Nagy, President - Assembly of the Baranya County, and last but not least, Ottó Karvalics, Mayor - City of Barcs.

This event served as an excellent opportunity to present the current projects of the water management sector, such as the projects on Flood Risk Management, navigation on River Drava and Storm reservoirs on the watershed of Baranya Canal were also described.

The festivity continued with the performers' show on stage from 3 o'clock in the afternoon.

International Danube Day as a professional event of water management provided entertaining programmes as well such as cooking contest, boat trips, motor-boating, even a photo exhibition was on view which topic covered the protection activity during the recent icy flood. Origami paper boats with logos of the twelve Hungarian Water Management Directorates and the General Directorate of Water Management were launched at River Drava symbolizing the cohesion and continuous common work.

At the event guests and participants were instructed by information points made by Danube-Drava National Park, SEFAG Forestry and Wood Industry Co. Ltd, the Municipality of Mesztegnyő,  Dráva Museum and Dráva Valley High School.
