The right spoil bank of Stream Jamai has broken on the section 2 + 900 km in Balatonboglár, therefore third degree of local flood alert emergency was ordered and issued by the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate on December 5, 2019 from 9:00 am.
On-site flood defense work has begun with sandbags and plank support and is still taking place.

The national poetry contest was launched for primary school students on the occasion of World Water Day in 2019 with the slogan “Leaving no one behind!”. Similarly to last year, this year's construction of the existing reservoir within the framework of settlement and regional development was also reviewed.
The length of the reservoir site to be built will be 2,600 meters, and its construction has begun at the end of June 2018. Due to the amount of the 2,000 - 3,000 cubic meters of daily work, the construction of the dike stature and the formation of the slope were completed by the contractor by the middle of October before the beginning of rainy season.

The lowest water level record (LKV) of River Danube was broken in the morning of 18th October, 2018 at Mohács. The water level of River Danube has been measured since 1901, and since then the lowest water level record was 62 cm on the 1st September 2003. Due to the recent extreme weather conditions the current water level of River Danube dropped below the lowest water level record (LKV) by 4 cm.

Because of the rainfall that has fallen over the past period, the water level of the Lake Balaton has increased. In the case of persistent north and north-east winds, this level of water rises on the lower southern shore, while it shrinks on the north shore.
In Nagyatád, the falling flood of Babócsai Rinya caused minor flooding. The basic problem in the settlement was that the main recipient Babócsai Rinya was unable to accommodate the waters of the extracullicular trenches due to its high water level.

This year the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate took part in the Earth Day Program as well, which was organized by the Danube-Drava National Park in Tettye, Pécs.
The Drava River Sub-basin Water Management Council held the first meeting at 19th April 2017. The meeting was led by Mr. Tamás Szabó, the chairman of Council and the vice-chairman of the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture.
The South-transdanubian Water Management Directorate was invited to contribute in an informing TV show related to an educational program on elementary school students. The employee of Department for Flood Control and River Management has helped to understand the upper school curriculum related to the rivers.
Last year a team named „Gátvéder” of General Directorate of Water Management took part like a gamer in the quiz show of a hungarian commercial channel. During the quiz game the team won a significant amount with it’s excellent knowledge, the team wanted to grant – as it was promised in the show - a dike keeper with the money of the prize won for his eminent merit rating activities.
Within the framework of the occasion of World Water Day ceremony in Budapest Mr. Sándor Dr. Pintér, Minister of Interior laureated three employees of South-transdanubian Water Management Directorate.
At 21th March 2017 the first semester students in Faculty of Hydrobiology of University of Pécs, Faculty of Science and some PhD students of Department of Hydrobiology visited within the framework of Msc course of „Hydrobiology” the Head of South-transdanubian Water Management Directorate, where the students could get to know in the frame of colorful presentations with four main responsibilities, the main projects of Directorate and the daily working activities.
Mr. Miklós Ift, the former chairman and Mr. Zoltán Bencs, the chairman of Hungarian Hydrological Society County Somogy - in occassion of World Water Day - took part in talk show titled Hatszemközt series of the Kapos Television Show at 21th March 2017.
International World Water Day is held annually on 22 March, from the officially designation of United Nations General Assembly in 1993, as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. The main objective of this day is to strenght the knowledge and importance of the role and protection of water to the next generation.

The public employment in the water sector has been proceeding permanently with a significantly large number of employees since 2012.
The sector has been organizing the National Water Sector-based Public Employment Conference since 2014 in order to discuss emerging issues, changes in laws and experiences.
The Hungarian Hydrological Society (HHS) in Baranya County held a session titeled „Water replenishment in the ‘Cún-Szaporca’ oxbow”. This session, as a next event of the centenary year of HHS was held at the University of Pécs Faculty of Sciences at 22th February 2017.

The Hungarian Hydrological Society (HHS) in Baranya County held a session titeled „The Hungarian Hydrological Society is 100 years old” at 25. January 2017. The South-transdanubian Water Directorate hosted the first centenary session.
The Section of Hydrology of the Hungarian Geological Society related to Hungarian Hydrological Society was established at 7th February in 1917 and was turned to an independent scientific society at 26th January in 1949. With this 100 years operation history, the Society is the oldest water-related national organisation, which is still functioning.
The system of water charge was completed in 2015. The South-transdanubian Water Management Directorate and the University of Pécs were established monitoring system to monitor the water flow of the region. The data of two monitoring systems have been analised under the evaluation.
Building upon the successful event in 2013, Hungary will again host the Budapest Water Summit between 28th and 30th November 2016 in order to give a momentum to the practical implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the UN as well as to achieve progress concerning the water-related aspects of the Paris Climate Agreement within the UN 21st Climate Conference.

Our Directorate forwards the information that the National Directorate General for Disaster Management, Ministry of Interior gave information of the calculation of the water resource fee, which will have been modified since 2017.
Alajos Burián, the head of Department for Flood Control and River Management, gave a lecture on the impact of hydroelectric power plants at the General Assembly of Local Government of Baranya County 17th November, 2016. Our directorate was invited to make a presentation in order to help the General Assembly adopting a policy relating the planned hydroelectric power plants on River Drava.
The flood protection facilities, which are in the maintenance of the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate, were verified this autumn as every year. During the autumn visits of flood protection and drainage control facilities and the watercourses of hill areas the supervision of related hydrographic, information technology and other infrastructure as well as means of protection and resources was completed by the professional committees which were set up for this purpose.
First level excess water preparedness was ordered by The South-transdanubian Water Management Directorate at 6 o'clock in the morning at 11th November 2016 at the pumping station in Ordacsehi, which can be found at drainage district numbered 05.03 in Balatonlelle (South-Balaton) at the catchment area of excess water of Zardavári, in addition at the the pumping station in Balatonlelle and Zamárdi at the catchment area of Zamárdi-Tóközi.
The contracted meeting of the South-transdanubian Regional Water Management Council and the Drava River Sub-basin Water Management Council was held at 9th November at South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate.
This autumn a professional forum was organised by South-Trandanubian Water Directorate in Harkány, when the General Directorate of Water Management and the other 12 water directorates met.

As Council Directive 91/271/EEC Article 16 lays down each Member State of the EU has to publish a situation report on the disposal of urban waste water.
The Hungarian report has been completed and was transmitted to the Commission on 8th July, 2016.
The implementation of “Water replenishment in the ‘Cún-Szaporca’ oxbow within the framework of Ancient Dráva Programme” was finished almost a year ago. The constructed weir replenishes water from Fekete-víz through a sluice which is integrated to the weir to a main and finally to the oxbow. The main purpose of the project was the retention of natural run-off water and storage in the areas which were designated to periodic flooding.
The Hungarian Hydrological Society’s Baranya county’s Organization held a lecture session titled „The last decades meteorological and hydrological characteristics on the Dráva.” in Pécs in the courtroom of the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate.
With referring to under the first paragraph of section 26/B. of Government Decree issued by the Ministry of Interior Nr. 37/2012. dated (VIII.2) on the foundated and donated recognition by the Minister of Interior the ’Lampl Hugó’ Memorial Plaque can be awarded to the person, who is responsible for the cost-effective implementated constructions planning and carrying out in the implementation of the hydraulic establishment bearing in mind the planning, the design, the technicological, the landscape aesthetics and environmentally high quality aspects.
The site of River Drava was visited by the hungarian and croatian water management experts between 13-14th September 2016, when the experts monitored the current status of the river at both site between the sections of 236+000 rkm (Őrtilos) and 78+000 (Drávaszabolcs).
In Hungary a type of long-term plans of water management has been called as framework plan since 1951.These plans, which contain maps in text, in tabular form and in 1:500 000 and 1:100 000 scale maps were presented the hydrological capabilities throughout its whole territory of country, the status of the water management was evaluated, the technological opportunities and economical conditions of the water damage prevention, the water demand gratification and the utilization of waters were determined.
The Sampling Workgroups of South-transdanubian Water Management Directorate with 4 employees (Valér Horvai, Nóra Istvándi-Feil, Ákos Püspök and András Fonód) took part on measuring practice held between 6-8th September 2016 in Siófok.
Last week the Technical Committee of the South-transdanubian Regional Water Management of Baranya County met twice to making the professional opinions connecting to the submitted project proposals. On the meetings, which were led by Mr János Pecze, the mayors of municipalities, the technical engineers and organisations, which complete the project proposals were invited in addition to members of the Commitee.

The legal experts and civil engineers – employed by the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate – made presentations about the High-water riverbed management plans and the legal registration procedures of the concerned areas to the colleagues of Baranya and Somogy County Disaster Management Directorate.

According to the Water Framework Directive which specify 6 yearly planning cycle have accomplished a supervision of the River Basin Management Plan, which has been produced at first in 2009 on national, sub-basin and planning sub-unit level.
On the 18th August 2016, at a ceremony held in the Marble Hall of the Ministry of the Interior to mark August 20, and to honour King Saint Stephen, considered to be the founder of the Hungarian state – Ferenc Szappanos, former managing director of the South-Transdanubian Water Managament Directorate received the Knight of the Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit from Deputy Minister Károly Kontár for his long and outstanding performance.

Significant amount of precipitation -between 35-90 mm- has fallen in the Austrian basin of River Drava since yesterday noon till noon today. According to the weather-forecast further rainfalls in the following days are unlikely.
The fallen rain causes floods on the upper section of the river, in Austria. Based on our the current information 1-1.5 meter water level rise is expected in the Hungarian section of the river as well. The sudden spate increases the speed of the river in the Hungarian stretch of the river, major driftwood migration can occur on the water surface. The river may pose increased danger to canoeists.
The own Mobile Application development of The National Water Level Observation Network is available on iTunes since 27th July 2016; thus the iOS users can easily find the latest information relating Danube, Tisza, Drava forecasts, meteorological background information on the River Danube catchment area, amount of snow accumulation in the sub-watersheds, shipping news, or even the water temperature of major rivers and lakes.
Within the framework of cooperative agreement between the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate and Kaposvár Training Centre Drava Valley High School six of the students spend -who are involved in water management technician training in the above mentioned institution- their summer practice at our directorate.

Directive 2007/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the assessment and management of flood risks requires Member States to carry out preliminary risk assessment, to prepare flood threat- and flood risk maps, and to take measures to reduce and manage flood risks. Such work started under the co-ordination of the General Directorate of Water Management in Hungary in 2010.
It has become obvious in recent years that there is a huge demand for well-prepared professionals in almost every expertise field in the country.
The South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate cancelled the inland water protection alert (Level 1) in the inland water protection section No. 05.03 of Balatonlelle (South-Balaton), in the pumping stations of Ordacsehi and Zamárdi effective from 6.00 pm on 31/03/16.
In March 1956 the River Danube froze through from Dunaföldvár to Mohács, while a floodwave was approaching. The dikes got broken at 58 locations, there were 5 casualties due to the icy flood, tens of thousands got evacuated and significant amount of areas got inundated.
On the occasion of the World Water Day, the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate and the Territorial Organizations of the Hungarian Hydrology Society in Counties Baranya and Somogy held a celebratory event in the Hall of the County Government Office in Pécs on 23rd March 2016.
The icy flood of 1956 on the river Danube is a specific phenomenon in the history of Hungarian floods. There were several massive, devastating icy floods previously, however all the icy floods in 1876, 1891, 1893, 1940, 1941 and in 1945 occurred when elementary and as such much weaker flood protection structures existed.
On the occasion of the World Water Day, Mr Sándor Troszt, Section Engineer, Head of the Section Engineering Unit of Pécs of the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate receives a Ministerial Certificate of Appreciation based on the recommendation of the Water Sector Advisory Board on 22nd March 2016.
The South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate cancelled the inland water protection alert Level 1 in the inland water protection section No. 05.02 of Kölked-Béda in the pumping station of Vizslak and in the inland water protection section No. 05.03 of Balatonlelle in the pumping stations of Balatonőszöd and Balatonlelle all effective from 6.00 pm on 18/03/16.

A successful test run was executed that started on 3rd March 2016 and finished on 10th March 2016 on the ‘Fekete-víz’ watercourse within project titled "Water replenishment of the ’Cún-Szaporca’ oxbow in the Ancient Drava Programme‘.

The ‘Akali’ passenger ship, which will hopefully support the development of the tourism on the River Dráva, arrived to the port of Barcs last Friday.
The South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate has increased the inland water protection alert level from Level 2 to Level 3 in the inland water protection section No. 05.03 of Balatonlelle (Southern-Balaton) at the pumping station of Balatonőszöd effective from 12.00 am on 19/02/16.
Local water damage prevention alert order got placed effective from 4.00 pm on 16th February 2016 in the northern parts of County Somogy including the watercourses in the table below
The first month of the year was significantly, about 3°C, warmer than previous years’ average. In January, the precipitation values (mainly snow) showed an increase by approximately one third compared to the corresponding values of last year in the South-Transdanubian region.
Due to the high water level in Lake Balaton and the rainy weather, the water level of the drainage canal has risen further; therefore, the operation of the pumping station in Balatonőszöd in the inland water protection section of Balatonlelle had to be intensified.

Within Project ID No. KEOP-2.1.1/B/15-2015-0001 titled ‘Procurement of machinery and equipment for executing flood protection and maintenance tasks of the water management directorates’ new machinery, equipment and instruments got procured by the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate at the end of 2015.
The Section Engineering of the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate in Kaposvár has been approached by the ’László Verebély’ Railway History Association of Kaposvár taking care of assets of high importance from the aspect of railway history to preserve the remains of the right-side bridge end of the ‘Kapos’ railway bridge near Sántos – the symbol of the former ’Kaposvár-Szigetvár’ railway line – for future generations during the construction works linked to the riverbed regulation of the River ’Kapos’.

The Water Conservation and Watershed Management National Conference, initiated by the General Directorate of Water Management, was held in Harkány between 10th-12th November 2015.
Between March 2014 and August 2015, a 27,899-kilometre-long network of state-owned, public canals enabling shipping got mapped; in addition, the cadastral of the linear hydraulic structures draining the harmful water got prepared that provides the basis to elaborate a modern and efficient inland water protection system on in the future.

The Deputy State Secretariat for Public Employment and Water Management of the Ministry of Interior has announced an invitation for nominations for 2016 ‘Lampl Hugó’ Memorial Plaque (pages 3728 and 3729 of 29th Issue of the Official Gazette 2015). The deadline for submitting or posting nominations is 30th September 2015.
The project activities linked to the removal of embedded logs and abandoned stone structures got completed on the joint Hungarian-Croatian 128.4-km long section of River Dráva to create safe shipping conditions.

The South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate (STWMD) and the Secretariat of the Government Commissioner responsible for the Ancient Dráva Porgramme at the Ministry of National Development organized and held a public forum titled “Water retention and land use change within the Ancient Dráva Programme” in the Training Room of the Ancient Dráva Visitor Centre in Szaporca on 31st August 2015.
Two of the water-sector programmes, the ’Review of River Drava’s Sub-catchment Management Plan’ as well as the ‘Jenő Kvassay Plan 2015 – National Water Strategy’ were presented at a forum in the organization of the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate and the General Directorate of Water Management held in Pécs on 25th August 2015 with the aim to get the plans introduced and consulted by the wider public.
As per the 6-year planning cycle of catchment management, the water sector is to review the catchment management plans by the end of 2015. Within the preparation phase of the above task, the documents called Significant Water Management Issues (abbreviated as JVK) were prepared in November 2014.
The South-Transdanubian Water Managament Directorate took part as an exhibitor in the Ancient Dráva Pavilion together with the Ancient Dráva Programme Office, the Danube-Dráva National Park Directorate and local farmers at the Farmers’ Day in Szentlőrinc held between 31st July and 2nd August 2015 organized by the Entrepreneur Centre of County Baranya.
The objective of the abovementioned document is to give guidelines for the engineers preparing flood damage prevention plans for settlements in structuring the documentation, such as defining the required content, the description fields, the annexes.
The General Directorate of Water Management organized and held the 12th International Danube Day on the Danube in Budapest on 29th June 2015.
Directive 2007/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council regulates the topics of the assessment and management of flood risks in a uniform and compulsory way for the EU countries.
After the re-structure of the water management organizations some tasks, such as the water sector-based data collection got handed over from the Ministry of Rural Development to the organizational units under the technical supervision of the Ministry of Interior as per the modification of the governmental decree No. 42/2014. (II.24.) on National Statistical Data Collection Programme on 22/02/14.

The South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate (DDVIZIG) attended a meeting organized by ’Eötvös József’ Technical College of Baja on 15th June 2015 where the colleagues of the college presented the results of the EU-funded Project ‘Higher-educational co-operation for the water sector’ (ID No. TÁMOP-4.1.1.C-12/1/KONV-2012-0015).
The closing ceremony of the project took place at the ‘Sió’ outlet structure on 23rd June 2015 which concluded the construction works of the Danube Project officially. With the help of more than 28 billion-forint EU funds, the flood safety of 152 settlements in six counties got increased.
The Section Engineering District of Kaposvár following the takeover of the watercourses from the water associations, beyond the existing 300.1 km long, Category A watercourses, from now on also operates 2,284 km long Cat. B watercourses.

The experts of the Water Management and Hydraulic Engineering Department of the Hungarian Chamber of Engineers, based on the request of the General Directorate of Water Management, have compiled a Methodology Guide to help the local governments in their flood and inland water protection activities.
The South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate ordered Level 1 of inland water protection alert effective from 10.00 am on 22/05/15 in the inland water protection section No. 05.03 of Balatonlelle, in the pumping station of Ordacsehi of the inland water drainage area in Zardavári.
The technical handover and acceptance procedure took place in Barcs on 13th May 2015 in the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate’s IPA Project ‘Drava’s riverbed cleaning’ (Ref No. HUHR/1101/1.1.2/0002).
The traditional hydrographic measuring training was held on 5-7 May 2015. This year the Central Tisza-region Water Management Directorate hosted the annual event. The training was organized to fulfil three main objectives.
The 12th Conference on the Research of Macroscopic Aquatic Invertebrates was held in Csapod from 9th to 11th April 2015. Valér Horvai, a member of the Water Protection and Watershed Management Department attended the technical conference on behalf of the South-Trandanubian Water Management Directorate.
The South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate, like in previous years, got invited to supervise the competition of the junior teams at the Disaster Management Day on 21/04/15.
The 22nd Conference on the Subsurface Waters was held in Siófok from 8th to 9th April 2015. Krisztina Mender and Ildikó Sághiné Juhász, the colleagues of the Water Protection and Watershed Management Department dealing with subsurface water management, attended the conference on behalf of the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate.
The South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate (STWMD), like in previous years, attended the Earth Day programmes organized by the Danube-Dráva National Park Directorate on 18th April 2015.
The Danube and Dráva Watershed Sub-Committee held its regular conference on 21-23 April 2015 in Harkány.
The April Fool’s Day jokes last for a couple of days, so does the weather that is currently more winterish instead of indulging us with a bit of summer, just like previous years.
Within the framework of the ‘Új Széchenyi Terv’ Programme, the development project titled ‘Emergency reservoir on River Kapos’ (“Vésztározás a Kaposon”) got successfully finished in the summer of 2014 and as a result, the retention of water has become possible in a regulated form in the valley of the River Kapos.

As a gesture of respect, the General Directorate of Water Management established the ‘Kvassay’ Commemoration Committee, which intends to renovate the ‘Kvassay’ graveyard located in ‘Őrbottyán’ through calling for public contribution. The inauguration of the graveyard will take place on 5th June 2015, on the 165th anniversary of Kvassay’s birth.
Sándor Pintér, the Minister of the Interior, handed a MINISTERIAL AWARD CERTIFICATE to GÁBOR LŐRINCZ, Area Supervisor of the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate honouring his exemplary work and long-term service within the water management sector at the World Water Day celebration held by the Ministry of Interior. Congratulations!
On the occasion of World Water Day, also highlighting the importance of the profession, our intention is to pay respect to our dike guards, the people knowing our natural waters and water resources the best. Their expertise and activity is impossible to be substituted in case of floods.

The South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate celebrated the World Water Day on 22nd March 2015 and offered colourful programmes at different locations. The programmes provided an enjoyable recreational activity and festive moments for various age groups.
A running competition was organized in Mohács on 22nd March 2015 in order to pay respect to the self-sacrificing work of our dike guards. The race started simultaneously at 10.00 am at various locations of the 12 water management directorates with the motto of ‘Run faster than the flood’. 120 competitors from the age of 6 to 60 gathered in Mohács for the 1.4 km long race. Thomas P. Bostick, US Army Lieutenant General, Chief of Engineers of the US Army (USACE) arrived in Hungary to get information on the status of flood and inland water protection activities and to have discussions with the Hungarian political elite, national and local water management experts on strengthening the co-operation.

Mr Balázs Somlyódy got appointed as the Director-General of the General Directorate of Water Management on 1st October 2014 by Mr Sándor Pintér, the Minister of Interior. The newly appointed Director-General visited our Directorate on 11th February 2015 to attend the Annual Assessment Meeting – Year 2014.

Year 2014 was significantly more humid than the average in the operational area of our Directorate. The cumulative of the annual precipitation of the 18 gauging stations last year was 921 mm exceeding the average of the previous years’ by 260 mm.

According to the Deputy Technical Director of the General Directorate of Water Management, a social debate will soon be launched on the flood protection strategy, Mr István Láng believes that at least as much attention should be given to the maintenance of existing protection structures as to the building of new ones.
There is inland water protection alert put in place in 46 inland water protection sections, in the area of 10 water management directorates. There is Alert Level 1 in 13 sections, Alert Level 2 in 31 sections and Alert Level 3 in 2 sections.

The South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate has cancelled Level 1 of inland protection alert in its inland water protection section No 05.02 of 'Kölked-Béda' and in the pumping station in Béda effective from 2.00pm on 03/02/15.
The South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate ordered Level 1 of inland water protection alert effective from 6.00 am on 23/01/15 due to the high water level in the drainage canal in the inland water protection section No. 05.03 of Balatonlelle in the pumping station in Szántód. Also due to high water level in the drainage canal, Alert Level 1 is in place in pumping stations in Zamárdi and Balatonöszöd effective from 6.00 am on 26/01/15. Furthermore, there is Alert Level 1 in the inland water protection section No. 05.02 of Kölked-Béda in the pumping stations of Gerechát and Béda effective from 7.00 am on 26/01/15.
The national organization will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2017. The organization of the Hungarian Hydrology Society (HHS) in County Baranya was one of the first founded in October 1952. Compared to other counties, the organization in County Somogy started its operation later, in 1972 only.
During the last six days the Alpine catchment area of the River Danube has seen 20-45 mm of precipitation. Below 1,500 metres of altitude the aggregate was rain that has eventuated significant snow melt. Some days ago the amount of water trapped in the snow was 4.5 km3 above the section of Pozsony that has decreased by its quarter due to the snow melting.
On 28th December 2014, it got clouded and started snowing throughout the country. There was a significant amount of snow in the south-western part of the country, thus in the operational area of our Directorate as well.
