One of Hungary’s biggest flood protection projects has been finished 24/06/15

The closing ceremony of the project took place at the ‘Sió’ outlet structure on 23rd June 2015 which concluded the construction works of the Danube Project officially. With the help of more than 28 billion-forint EU funds, the flood safety of 152 settlements in six counties got increased.

The Danube Project, beyond the reinforcement of the flood protection system of the Hungarian Danube section, primarily targeted the protection of human life through reducing flood threat. The renovation works of the project were carried out on Category 1 state flood protection levee sections.
As a result of the construction works of the 11 project elements, the flood safety in the affected areas has significantly been increased in the complete Hungarian section of the Danube. The investment, that involved the development of an about 200 kilometre-long dike section on the Danube in Hungary, got a ceremonious closure on 23rd June 2015. The invited guests and attendees of the event were greeted by Mr János Áder, the President of Hungary; Mr Kálmán Horváth, Government Appointee and Mr Balázs Somlyódy, the Director-General of the General Directorate of Water Management (OVF). The monumental developments of the project were presented by Mr Tamás Dalmady, the Managing Director of ‘REÁL-Gép Kft.’.

The achievements of the project affect approximately 510,000 inhabitants, five water management directorates.  As part of the project, 25 flood protection structures (sluices, pumping stations, dam drainage, etc.) got modernized or built; dike crest paving or crest modernization works got carried out in the length of more than 100 kilometres; furthermore, a new, 12-km long flood protection dike got constructed.
