The new ship of Barcs has anchored 22/02/16

The ‘Akali’ passenger ship, which will hopefully support the development of the tourism on the River Dráva, arrived to the port of Barcs last Friday. The citizens of Barcs expressed their great interest toward the new passenger ship since many of them were waiting for its arrival. The ‘Akali’ ship was built in 1959 and will support the tourism on the Dráva for another 50 years according to plans. The ship was bought by the local government at a price of 18.5 million HUF from the Balaton Shipping Co.

Having bought with the intention of developing the tourism, the ship currently is on the border river whilst guardsmen ensure its safekeeping.

The passenger ship started from Siófok on Monday and after a five-day period finally arrived to Barcs on Friday following an adventure-filled trip.

‘First we shipped through the Sió Canal, then continued on early Tuesday and had an exciting voyage through areas with overgrown trees’, mentioned Mr György Balázs, the Captain of the ship on arrival. ‘Then we got to the ‘Keselyűsi’ sluice where the ship got handed over to the local government of Barcs, so the temporarily fixed protective wooden cover got removed.’

Afterwards the passenger ship continued its journey onto the River Danube and arrived to the port of Barcs via the shipping route of Mohács – Osijek – Drávaszabolcs along several Croatian sections. According to the captain, the rainy and foggy weather slowed down their movement slightly as well as did the extra manoeuvring due to the driftwood on the Dráva.

‘We have been thinking about a complex tourism programme where the parties on the two sides of the state border can strengthen each other’, said Mr Ottó Karvalics, the Mayor at the latest board meeting. ‘The ship will be renamed so the inhabitants of Barcs will have the opportunity to submit their ideas or suggestions.’

The ship currently is in the port of Barcs and is staying there until Monday as per the plans under the watchful eyes of the local guardsmen.
