Inland water protection on new grounds – Database made for 30,000-kilometre-long canals 02/12/15

2015. december 02., szerda 14:12

Between March 2014 and August 2015, a 27,899-kilometre-long network of state-owned, public canals enabling shipping got mapped; in addition, the cadastral of the linear hydraulic structures draining the harmful water got prepared that provides the basis to elaborate a modern and efficient inland water protection system on in the future.

Mr Ferenc Szigeti, the Department Manager of the Department for IT and Archive at the General Directorate of Water Management, delivered a presentation on the results of Project ‘BEKKA’ and highlighted the extent of the tasks by mentioning that the experts had collected data of 7,591 canals covering the total area of the country. Furthermore, they carried out the geodesic survey of the 27,899-kilometre-long drainage system as well as formulated the available data of the 1,975-kilometre-long canal network recorded in 2011 into a unified framework.

The data of the surveyed canals now can be integrated into the digital water-sector database. The data of the maps have been recorded in a format that is generally used and compatible with the database of the Water Archive.

Through Project ‘BEKKA’ - financed by the European Union -, a database got created that provides an objective picture on the state-owned, public linear hydraulic structures enabling shipping and draining the harmful water in the country; on their ownership status and actual technical status.

Based on the cadastral, both the state and the operators of the facilities knowing the accurate ownership status will be able to make decisions that support the operation to the appropriate standard.
