Hungary’s excess water risk map is available

2015. október 19., hétfő 11:46

The task of creating excess water risk maps of Hungary have been completed within the Project ’Flood risk mapping and preparing strategic risk management plan’

Within Project ’Flood risk mapping and preparing strategic risk management plan’ (Programme KEOP, ID No. 2.5.0/B/09-12-2013-0001) – hereinafter referred to as ÁKK -, the excess water risk mapping activity has been implemented separately in Phase 3 as a sub-task of the flood risk management planning. The closing event of the project took place in the Lurdy Conference and Event Centre in Budapest at 10.00 am on 28th September 2015. On behalf of ‘ÁKK 2014’ Consortium, Mr Csaba Bozán (NAIK ÖKVI) presented the results and experiences of the project.

The excess water risk mapping activity titled ‘High-resolution inland water risk mapping of cultivated lands with adverse water management status in the flatland areas of Hungary (The Great Plain, The Little Hungarian Plain and sporadic areas’ got carried out by the colleagues of the Department of Independent Water Management Research (ÖVKI) at the National Agricultural Research and Innovation Centre (NAIK) and had been assigned to them by ‘VIZITERV Environ Ltd.’, the leader of the ‘ÁKK 2014 Consortium’.

The aim of the project was to create a valid, timely and modern excess water risk map by processing the available knowledge and data that could facilitate the planning of excess water control and the development of excess water systems as a pre-decision making tool.

Previously, there were several concepts on the elaboration of the methodology of the excess water risk mapping in different research workshops; although,  with the exception of the ‘Pálfai’ excess water risk maps that offers quite a large coverage of Hungary, there has been no such map prepared. Teaming up with Dr. István Orlóci and Dr. Imre Pálfai, the NAIK ÖVKI worked on the elaboration of a modern methodology of excess water risk mapping for more than ten years. Based on the elaborated and applied methodology, having processed the base and derived data, having taken six complex factors (hydro-meteorology, terrain, pedology, geology, groundwater, land use) and the excess water frequency data into consideration, the map got prepared for the lowlands of Hungary based on the Complex Excess Water Vulnerability Index.

As the methodology of making the excess water risk maps is well-established; therefore, the outcome is such a thorough and appropriately underpinned study, where the general vulnerability index can get defined and categorised for both the outer and inner belt areas.
