Lake Barátúri – the largest storm water reservoir in terms of water capacity was built a year ago on the catchment area of Baranya Canal

2020. május 27., szerda 13:26

In the last decade, short-term, heavy rains have often occurred in the operational area of the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate, as the result of extreme weather conditions, which had the impact of flooding. These unpredictable flash floods have caused significant local damages in residential and agricultural areas of the river basin. Along the watercourses of Baranya Canal’s catchment area particularly severe damages occurred due to flood waves as the consequence of heavy rains in May-June 2010.

The primary goal of the construction of the 53.5-hectare reservoir with a capacity of 1,280,000 cubic meters was to reduce the risk of spring floods by retaining water and reducing the incoming water flow. The project preparation began in February 2016 and the implementation phase started in the autumn of 2017. During the construction work, which lasted for a year and a half, the hydrographic measuring station was completed, the reservoir bed and its side dam were created, the cross regulator and outlet canal structures were built and Baranya Canal was dredged.

The reservoir named Lake Barátúri has the largest capacity of the planned storm reservoirs - so it has significant role in terms of water damage mitigation. The reservoir, which was built on the border of the villages of Magyarhertelend and Magyarszék in the village Barátúr and was inaugurated in the summer of 2019 – retains the runoff of floods coming from Kaszánya stream and the upper section of Baranya Canal. In case of highwaters’ runoff the maximum flooding area is 54 hectares. This reservoir is a longitudinal regulation structure thus the excess water flow of Baranya Canal flows into the reservoir’s storage space through the 60-meter-wide side weir.

Due to the implementation of the reservoir and as the result of its water retention capacity the risk of flooding is reduced, in drought periods water replenishment can be realized, the water flow of watercourses can be made more even.
The artificial water body of the reservoir permanently covers 28 hectares for most of the year and its complex utilization allows a popular form of recreation for the inhabitants living in the area and provides an opportunity to go fishing there.
The flood peak-reducing effect of the reservoir will be significantly palpable even at the distance of Sásd and about four thousand inhabitants will be effectively protected from flood damage in an event of flood.

The investment was implemented from EU funds within the framework of Széchenyi 2020 Environment and Energy Efficiency Operational Program.
