Plant a tree for our Planet’s future – one individual planting a tree can make a difference

2020. november 10., kedd 13:15

The South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate considers environmental protection, maintenance and care as vitally important and essential. We are convinced that our values and its conservation can only be entrusted with the future generations if we teach them how to do so. This objective is only feasible in case the next generation is involved by us in the initiatives regarding environmental protection, if we work on this mission together and constantly cooperate on these issues and cultivate the mind-set concerning environmental awareness, then the next generation will be capable to respond the challenges of the future.

The reservoir, which was built on the border of the villages of Magyarhertelend and Magyarszék in the village Barátúr and was inaugurated in the summer of 2019 – retains floods’ runoff coming from stream Kaszánya and the upper section of Baranya Canal. In case of highwaters’ runoff the maximum flooding area is 54 hectares. This reservoir is a longitudinal regulation structure thus the excess water flow of Baranya Canal flows into the reservoir’s storage space through the 60-meter-wide side weir.
The investment was implemented from EU funds within the framework of Széchenyi 2020 Environment and Energy Efficiency Operational Program as a project of the consortium comprised the General Directorate of Water Management and the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate.
This year, besides the mandatory activities during the maintenance period of the project, the operating water level was set by our experts and the ideal and healthy proportions of lake flora and aquatic plants was approved by our specialists.

The flood peak-reducing effect of the reservoir will be significantly palpable as about four thousand inhabitants will be effectively protected from flood damage in an event of flood.
Due to the artificial water body of the reservoir permanently covers 28 hectares for most of the year, it is vital importance of cooperating with local governments to agree on attitudes and actions in order to preserve and protect it from pollution and contamination.
That is the main reason why we have joined and support the initiative of the Ten Million Tree Community. It is our great pleasure to plant trees at the area of village Barátúr, at the location of the storage reservoir with the largest capacity of the region.

Thanks to the above mentioned initiative trees will cover the lake area, will provide shade, clean the air, improve landscape aesthetics and make the already wonderful environment even more picturesque.

Life on earth is changing dramatically. We must draw attention to the protection of our rivers as well, which are part of our environment and an indispensable and irreplaceable natural treasure of our lives.
The joint tree planting event will also raise awareness to the multifaceted relationship between water and humanity, as well as to climate change and environmental protection.
This event provides an organized opportunity and makes it simple for individuals, citizens of the settlement, residential communities and institutions to make our living environment more livable as large-scale minimal participation makes an overwhelming impact.

We would like to invite and encourage you to follow the initiative “Plant a tree for our Planet’s future”and join in the tree planting event organized by the Ten Million Tree Community.
