Volunteers’ qualification was renewed prolonged in Vejti - the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate was also represented at the flood protection practice June 26, 2021

2021. augusztus 16., hétfő 10:21

The rains of the previous days did not spare County Baranya either. Third-degree water damage alert was ordered Vejti in County Baranya due to the significantly increased water level caused by sudden heavy rainfall. Professional and voluntary rescue organizations were faced by this very same simulated situation at the national flood protection practice.

In addition to professional firefighters, 22 rescue organizations of County Baranya and the capital also played a significant role at the event, which was attended by almost 180 people, on June 26, 2021 (Saturday).

The participants of the flood protection exercise were greeted by Antal Mácsai, head of the Baranya County Directorate for Disaster Management. He confirmed that volunteers make a major contribution to the successful operation of disaster management. Thus, the objective of the field exercise was not only to eliminate the damages caused by rains as quickly and efficiently as possible, but also to practice and deepen the cooperation between the bodies involved in the event. He mentioned the previous day's heavy hail as an example, which caused significant damages in County Baranya as well.

Zoltán Bencs, head of the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate, also emphasized the importance of cooperation. He also pointed out that although the work on disaster management and water management is different, recent experience has proved that the two organizations need to work together to solve potential problems more effectively.

Participants at the flood protection exercise were responsible for, among other things, securing the damage sites, pruning and cutting down dangerous trees, and ensuring the unobstructed flow of water by cleaning the culverts. The work took place at five sites, under the coordination of professional site commanders appointed by the disaster management directorate.

Practice has proved that coordinated work is essential for rapid and effective intervention. Nothing justified this better than an alert, which was received during the exercise as the result of which professional and volunteer teams - forty people in number - marched to Kadarkút in County Somogy to repair the damage caused by Friday's hail.

As closer of the programme, Brigadier General dr. Ferenc Tóth evaluated the flood protection practice, congratulated on the work of the rescue organizations and handed over qualification certificates.
