Events ArchiveFlood levee sections have hierarchical rankings, which mean they can be first, second, or third level priority structures. The latter is often referred to as inner dyke.
In the operational area of ?? our Directorate, the first-level priority flood protection main levee section protects a total of 30,000 inhabitants in 34 settlements. This section stretches on the right bank of River Danube – the left or right side of a river depends on the direction of downstream, so turn to the direction of downstream to decide – from the Hungarian-Croatian border to Mohács it is 19.9 kilometres, and on the left bank of River Drava from the border to Tótújfalu it is 87.4 kilometres with Pécsi-víz and Fekete-víz, which are protected by dikes. These embankments protect against flooding the sub-catchment area of Mohács with regard to River Danube, and the sub-catchment areas of Drávaszabolcs, Kémes and Ormánság in reference to River Drava. The area of ??these embankments covers 53 square kilometres along River Danube and almost 300 square kilometres along River Drava, which are inhabited by the population of 34 settlements.
The length of second level priority flood levee sections, which are called localization embankments, is less than twenty kilometres (18.5 km) in the operational area of South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate (DDVIZIG), whereas the length of third level priority flood levee sections in other words inner dykes is 5.2 kilometres. The construction of flood protection structures along River Danube was carried out by the South-Transdanubian Water Management Directorate and in respect of flood protection they are safe. The reconstruction works of the wall protecting the city of Mohács were completed in 1992 as the final touch of flood levee sections’ development.
Most regrettably this is not the case on the left bank of River Drava regarding flood levee sections. The construction of the flood defence system along River Drava is not unified, its condition and ability to protect differs widely. Due to developments of the recent period, the altitude of dike crests was raised above the design flood stage level by 60 centimetres from the East areas of Drávasztára and on sections of Fekete and Pécs-víz, which are protected by dikes. However, the law sets the embankment height of River Drava at 1.2 meters above design flood stage level; subsequently the current dike crest level must be raised by another 60 centimetres on these sections. Our Directorate is responsible for the following organizational duties regarding flood protection, protection against ice jam and flooding, inland inundation protection, water quality damage prevention and management of local water damage tasks within its remit;
besides preparations, implementation and documentation of defenses, operation of other official defense services and necessary management of defenders’ activities.
Catchment area of excess water and pumping station:
There are three catchment areas of excess water in the operational area of our directorate. These sections contain 172.7 square kilometres along River Drava, 59.0 square kilometres along River Danube, and 23.91 square kilometres on the southern shore of Lake Balaton.
These catchment areas are protected by 12 so-called stable pumping stations, which are listed below:
